About Event

The Zonta Club of Bendigo is delighted to welcome our community back to our Birthing Kit Assembly Day.  Volunteers from the community, family groups and senior school students are invited to help assemble birthing kits on Saturday 3 October.

Volunteers are welcome to attend for just an hour, or for longer if they have time. Booking is via Humanitix as places are limited. https://events.humanitix.com/zonta-bendigo-birthing-kit-assembly-day

The small lightweight kit provides a clean birth environment to reduce infection-related deaths. It is estimated that for every 11 birthing kits distributed, a mother or baby’s life is saved. Kits produced in Bendigo have been sent to remote locations in Africa including the Congo and Uganda.  And in 2026, Zonta Bendigo’s 2000 kits could save another 180 lives and provide a hygienic birthing environment for many others.

Birthing kits contain:

  • A plastic sheet to prevent mother and baby from touching a dirt floor
  • Soap and gloves to prevent a birth attendant from transmitting germs to the mother and baby and to clean the mother’s perineum
  • Gauze to clean the baby’s eyes of birth canal secretions
  • A sterile scalpel blade to provide a clean cut of the umbilical cord reducing infection
  • Clean cord to prevent bleeding from the umbilical cord.

Participation in the production of birthing kits is regarded as a great opportunity for community service by many local schools and although the assembly day is in school holidays students are welcome to attend.

More information is on the Humanitix booking site.
