Bendigo Regional Genealogical Society Inc

Family History
Societies

Our Society was established in April 1982 by Bendigonians interested in researching their family history and putting together a collection of local history resources to help others. Every Monday between 11am and 3pm volunteers are on duty at the Bendigo Library (pandemic rules permitting.) Many interesting projects have been completed over the years. Meetings are held on the last Thursday of the month (Feb to Nov) at 7:30pm at the Kangaroo Flat Uniting Church Hall. Visitors welcome. Our 'Golden Links' newsletter is circulated quarterly to members and other like-minded groups across Australia. Contact us via our website: https://brgsbendigo.weebly.com/

About Us

PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO THE UNCERTAINTY AROUND COVID RESTRICTIONS, PLEASE PHONE THE SECRETARY ON 0414 819 986 IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO GO INTO THE BENDIGO LIBRARY FOR ASSISTANCE WITH RESEARCH OR ATTEND A MONTHLY MEETING.

The Society's 40th anniversary celebration is planned for 28 April, 2022, pandemic rules permitting.  A good number of original members still volunteer every Monday at our base, the Bendigo Goldfields Library in Hargreaves Street, assisting visitors with their research between 11am and 3pm.

Members also collect Bendigo Advertiser birth and death notices. Another group transcribes and indexes Bendigo's Court records in the BRAC reading room – our database contains over 70,000 records, transcribed from original books over a number of decades.  Unfortunately, the current pandemic has interrupted the process.

Other projects over the years have included transcribing and recording the Bendigo and Inglewood Hospital Admissions books to 1900; Bendigo Council rate books to 1875; St Paul's Church of England marriages and christenings to 1900 - space does not permit inclusion of all here.

Over the months back in the late 1980s a group of keen members visited the Bendigo and Maldon cemeteries and recorded the writing on each headstone.

Our friendly group meets on the last Thursday of the month (February to November inclusive) at the Kangaroo Flat Uniting Church hall, Cnr Church and Camp Streets and visitors are always welcomed.
