Since 1958, BHS has been a strong community group that has an historically significant collection of over 30,000 objects that conveys the history of the community. It also organises exhibitions, history walks, talks, research & publications. BHS has a statement of purpose that aims to reflects the diversity of people and cultures that came to the early goldfields and to explore the personalities, events, activities, industries and businesses that have influenced the history and culture of Bendigo and district. It is representative of the unique history of a major regional city in Victoria, built on an Australian goldfield of national and international importance. Most components of the collection indicate strong links with the local families and identities in the community, many also connected with civic development, commerce and industry in the area. Some items in the collection are considered to be very rare and representative of their kind.
